- 聽力圖: 動物的聽力成績單：一張曲線圖，顯示每個高度的聲音要多大，牠才剛開始聽得見。線越低，耳朵越靈。跟你在耳鼻喉科做的檢查是同一類。
- 超音波: 高到人耳再也接收不到的聲音，大約在 20,000 Hz 以上。對你來說是徹底的寂靜，可是狗、貓和蝙蝠聽得清清楚楚。所謂「無聲」的狗哨，正是響在這個區間。
- 次聲波: 低到人耳再也接收不到的聲音，大約在 20 Hz 以下。與其說聽見，不如說你會覺得胸口發顫，就像一輛重型卡車從旁邊開過。大象和鴿子卻能察覺到它，哪怕在幾公里之外。
- 赫茲（Hz）: 赫茲數的是一個聲音每秒振動多少次。振動少就是低音（雷聲的轟隆，約 30 Hz）；振動多就是高音（微波爐的提示音，約 3,000 Hz）。而「1 kHz」只是 1,000 Hz 的簡寫。你聽得到的大致是 20 Hz 到 20,000 Hz。
- 聽閾: 一個聲音不再是寂靜的最小音量：也就是動物剛開始聽見它的那個點。這個點越低，耳朵越靈敏。
