- 청력도(오디오그램): 동물의 청력 성적표입니다. 각 높이의 소리를 듣기 시작하는 데 필요한 최소 음량을 그린 그래프로, 선이 아래에 있을수록 귀가 예민하다는 뜻입니다. 당신이 이비인후과에서 받는 검사와 같은 종류입니다.
- 초음파: 너무 높아서 사람 귀가 더는 잡아내지 못하는 소리, 대략 20,000 Hz 이상입니다. 당신에게는 완전한 침묵이지만 개, 고양이, 박쥐에게는 또렷하게 들립니다. 이른바 '소리 없는' 개 호루라기가 바로 이 영역에 있습니다.
- 초저주파음: 너무 낮아서 사람 귀가 더는 잡아내지 못하는 소리, 대략 20 Hz 이하입니다. 듣는다기보다 큰 트럭이 지나갈 때처럼 가슴이 울리는 느낌에 가깝습니다. 코끼리와 비둘기는 수 킬로미터 밖에서도 이를 감지합니다.
- 헤르츠(Hz): 헤르츠는 소리가 1초에 몇 번 진동하는지를 세는 단위입니다. 진동이 적으면 낮은 소리(천둥의 우르릉, 약 30 Hz), 많으면 높은 소리(전자레인지 알림음, 약 3,000 Hz)입니다. 그리고 '1 kHz'는 1,000 Hz를 짧게 쓴 것일 뿐입니다. 당신이 듣는 범위는 대략 20 Hz에서 20,000 Hz까지입니다.
