- オージオグラム（聴力図）: 動物の聴力の成績表です。それぞれの高さの音を聞き取り始めるのに必要な最小の音量をグラフにしたもので、線が下にあるほど耳がいいことを意味します。耳鼻科であなたが受けるのと同じ種類の検査です。
- 超音波: 高すぎて人の耳が拾えなくなる音、おおよそ20,000 Hzより上のことです。あなたには完全な無音ですが、犬や猫、コウモリにははっきり聞こえます。「音の出ない」犬笛が鳴っているのは、まさにこの領域です。
- 超低周波音: 低すぎて人の耳が拾えなくなる音、おおよそ20 Hzより下のことです。聞こえるというより、大型トラックが通り過ぎたときのように胸が震える感覚に近いでしょう。ゾウやハトは、何キロも離れていてもこれを感じ取ります。
- ヘルツ（Hz）: ヘルツは、音が1秒間に何回振動するかを数えた数字です。振動が少なければ低い音（雷のゴロゴロ、およそ30 Hz）、多ければ高い音（電子レンジの電子音、およそ3,000 Hz）。「1 kHz」は1,000 Hzの短い言い方にすぎません。あなたに聞こえるのは、だいたい20 Hzから20,000 Hzまでです。
- 聴覚のしきい値: 音が無音でなくなる最小の音量、つまり動物がそれを聞き取り始めるちょうどその点です。この点が低いほど耳が繊細だということになります。

## 正直に言うと

これは忠実な近似であって、そのままの再現ではありません。科学論文で発表された測定値をもとにしていますが、動物の頭の中に入って本当の感じ方を確かめられる人はいないからです。
