## કશું કલ્પિત નથી: બધું સાચા સંશોધનમાંથી

અહીંના દરેક પ્રાણી પાછળ એક સાચું માપ છે: કયા મોટા અવાજથી એ સાંભળવા લાગે છે એ ઊંચાઈ-ઊંચાઈએ વૈજ્ઞાનિકોએ તપાસ્યું છે. એ જ વક્રોથી અમે તમારો અવાજ બદલીએ છીએ, અને દરેક પાના પર સ્રોત જણાવીએ છીએ. આ પ્રામાણિક અંદાજ છે, પ્રાણીના અનુભવની હૂબહૂ નકલ નહીં.

- અતિધ્વનિ: એટલા ઊંચા અવાજ કે તમારો કાન એની નોંધ જ લેતો નથી: આશરે 20,000 Hz ઉપર. તમારા માટે એ સંપૂર્ણ મૌન છે, પણ કૂતરો, બિલાડી કે ચામાચીડિયું એ સરસ સાંભળે છે. કૂતરાની “અવાજ વગરની” સીટી બરાબર ત્યાં જ વાગે છે.
- અધોધ્વનિ: એટલા નીચા અવાજ કે તમારો કાન એની નોંધ જ લેતો નથી: આશરે 20 Hz નીચે. એ સાંભળવાને બદલે તમને છાતીમાં કંપન લાગશે, જેમ ભારે ટ્રક પસાર થાય ત્યારે થાય. હાથી અને કબૂતર જોકે એ ઝીલે છે, કિલોમીટર દૂરથી પણ.
- હર્ટ્ઝ (Hz): એક અવાજ સેકન્ડમાં કેટલી વાર કંપે છે એ હર્ટ્ઝ ગણે છે. ઓછાં કંપન = નીચો (વીજળીનો ગડગડાટ, આશરે 30 Hz). વધુ કંપન = ઊંચો (માઇક્રોવેવની બીપ, આશરે 3,000 Hz). અને “1 kHz” એટલે 1,000 Hz કહેવાની ટૂંકી રીત. તમે સ્થૂળ રીતે 20 Hz થી 20,000 Hz સુધી સાંભળો છો.
- શ્રવણ ઉંબર: એ લઘુતમ મોટાઈ જ્યાં અવાજ મૌન રહેવાનું બંધ કરે છે: બરાબર એ બિંદુ જ્યાં પ્રાણી એને સાંભળવા લાગે છે. એ બિંદુ જેટલું નીચે, સાંભળવાની શક્તિ એટલી સંવેદનશીલ.

## સાચું કહીએ તો

આ એક પ્રામાણિક અંદાજ છે, હૂબહૂ નકલ નહીં. અમે વૈજ્ઞાનિક અભ્યાસોમાં પ્રકાશિત માપોથી જ શરૂ કરીએ છીએ; પણ કોઈ પ્રાણીના માથામાં જઈને એ ખરેખર શું અનુભવે છે એ કોઈ ચકાસી શકતું નથી.
