# Animal Ears — Hear the world through their ears. > Upload a sound and hear it back the way an animal would. > Your audio stays on this device. language: en canonical: https://animalears.app/en/ ## Nothing invented here: this comes from real studies Every animal here has a real measurement behind it: scientists who checked, pitch by pitch, the volume at which it starts to hear. We use those curves to transform your sound, and we cite the source on every page. It's an honest approximation, not an exact copy of what the animal feels. ## Choose an animal (45) Lowest it hears / Highest it hears / Hears most clearly: - Human (Homo sapiens) — 20 Hz / 20 kHz / 3.1 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/human/ - Dog (Canis familiaris) — 67 Hz / 45 kHz / 4 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/dog/ - Cat (Felis catus) — 55 Hz / 79 kHz / 8 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/cat/ - Cattle (Bos taurus) — 23 Hz / 35 kHz / 8 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/bull/ - Horse (Equus caballus) — 55 Hz / 33.5 kHz / 2 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/horse/ - Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) — 96 Hz / 49 kHz / 1 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/rabbit/ - Mouse (Mus musculus) — 2.3 kHz / 85.5 kHz / 16 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/mouse/ - Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) — 115 Hz / 54 kHz / 8 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/deer/ - Ferret (Mustela putorius furo) — 36 Hz / 44 kHz / 12 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/ferret/ - Raccoon (Procyon lotor) — 100 Hz / 40 kHz / 1 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/raccoon/ - Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) — 200 Hz / 5.7 kHz / 2 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/eagle/ - Honeybee (Apis mellifera) — 10 Hz / 500 Hz / 265 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/honeybee/ - Shark (Negaprion brevirostris) — 10 Hz / 1 kHz / 300 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/shark/ - Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) — 75 Hz / 150 kHz / 60 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/dolphin/ - Elephant (Elephas maximus) — 17 Hz / 10.5 kHz / 1 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/elephant/ - Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) — 1 Hz / 200 Hz / 60 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/octopus/ - Snake (Python regius) — 80 Hz / 1 kHz / 160 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/snake/ - Fly (Aedes aegypti) — 80 Hz / 800 Hz / 380 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/housefly/ - Mantis shrimp (Hemisquilla californiensis) — 20 Hz / 1 kHz / 40 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/mantis_shrimp/ - Gecko (Gekko gecko) — 100 Hz / 5 kHz / 1 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/gecko/ - Pigeon (Columba livia) — 40 Hz / 8.5 kHz / 1 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/pigeon/ - Pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) — 42 Hz / 40.5 kHz / 8 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/pig/ - Goat (Capra hircus) — 78 Hz / 37 kHz / 2 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/goat/ - Sheep (Ovis aries) — 100 Hz / 30 kHz / 7 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/sheep/ - Squirrel (Sciurus niger) — 113 Hz / 49 kHz / 8 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/squirrel/ - Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) — 70 Hz / 38 kHz / 8 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/reindeer/ - Bat (Eptesicus fuscus) — 2.6 kHz / 100 kHz / 20 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/bat/ - Seal (Phoca vitulina) — 50 Hz / 30 kHz / 3.2 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/seal/ - Tiger (Panthera tigris) — 55 Hz / 79 kHz / 8 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/tiger/ - Owl (Tyto alba) — 200 Hz / 12 kHz / 6.3 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/owl/ - Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) — 9 Hz / 7.2 kHz / 2 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/chicken/ - Hummingbird (Lampornis clemenciae) — 300 Hz / 7 kHz / 2 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/hummingbird/ - Duck (Anas platyrhynchos) — 66 Hz / 7.6 kHz / 2 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/duck/ - Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) — 250 Hz / 10 kHz / 2 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/penguin/ - Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) — 100 Hz / 1.5 kHz / 350 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/chameleon/ - Sea turtle (Caretta caretta) — 50 Hz / 1 kHz / 300 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/sea_turtle/ - Frog (Rana catesbeiana) — 100 Hz / 3 kHz / 200 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/frog/ - Crocodile (Alligator mississippiensis) — 100 Hz / 4 kHz / 1 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/crocodile/ - Goldfish (Carassius auratus) — 50 Hz / 3 kHz / 500 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/goldfish/ - Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) — 75 Hz / 1.8 kHz / 75 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/clownfish/ - Dragonfish (Stomiidae) — 50 Hz / 1 kHz / 150 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/dragonfish/ - Butterfly (Morpho peleides) — 500 Hz / 10 kHz / 3 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/butterfly/ - Dragonfly (Anax junius) — 10 Hz / 500 Hz / 100 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/dragonfly/ - Jumping spider (Phidippus audax) — 80 Hz / 2 kHz / 100 Hz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/jumping_spider/ - Moth (Agrotis segetum) — 3 kHz / 100 kHz / 30 kHz — https://animalears.app/en/animals/moth/ ## What you hear 20 Hz – 20 kHz. ## Glossary - Audiogram: An animal's hearing report card: a graph showing the quietest volume it needs before it starts to hear each pitch. The lower the line sits, the sharper its hearing. It's the same kind of test they run on you at the audiologist. - Ultrasound: Sounds so high your ears no longer register them: above about 20,000 Hz. To you they are total silence, but a dog, a cat or a bat hears them perfectly. That's exactly where a ‘silent' dog whistle lives. - Infrasound: Sounds so deep your ears no longer register them: below about 20 Hz. Rather than hearing them, you'd feel a tremor in your chest, like a heavy lorry going past. Elephants and pigeons do sense them, even from miles away. - Hertz (Hz): Hertz count how many times per second a sound vibrates. Few vibrations = low (the rumble of thunder, about 30 Hz). Many vibrations = high (a microwave beeping, about 3,000 Hz). And ‘1 kHz' is just shorthand for 1,000 Hz. You hear, roughly, from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. - Hearing threshold: The quietest volume at which a sound stops being silence: the exact point where an animal starts to hear it. The lower that point, the finer its hearing. ## Let's be honest This is a close approximation, not an exact copy. We start from measurements published in scientific studies, but nobody can climb inside an animal's head to check what it actually feels like. ## Where these numbers come from Thresholds are digitised from published behavioural and neurophysiological audiograms; every species page lists its citations. In-air curves are dB SPL (re 20 µPa); underwater species use dB re 1 µPa and invertebrates use relative/detection-band curves — each page states which. ## Choose your language (70) - en: https://animalears.app/en/llms.txt - af: https://animalears.app/af/llms.txt - am: https://animalears.app/am/llms.txt - ar: https://animalears.app/ar/llms.txt - az: https://animalears.app/az/llms.txt - be: https://animalears.app/be/llms.txt - bg: https://animalears.app/bg/llms.txt - bn: https://animalears.app/bn/llms.txt - ca: https://animalears.app/ca/llms.txt - cs: https://animalears.app/cs/llms.txt - da: https://animalears.app/da/llms.txt - de: https://animalears.app/de/llms.txt - el: https://animalears.app/el/llms.txt - es: https://animalears.app/es/llms.txt - et: https://animalears.app/et/llms.txt - eu: https://animalears.app/eu/llms.txt - fa: https://animalears.app/fa/llms.txt - fi: https://animalears.app/fi/llms.txt - fil: https://animalears.app/fil/llms.txt - fr: https://animalears.app/fr/llms.txt - gl: https://animalears.app/gl/llms.txt - gu: https://animalears.app/gu/llms.txt - he: https://animalears.app/he/llms.txt - hi: https://animalears.app/hi/llms.txt - hr: https://animalears.app/hr/llms.txt - hu: https://animalears.app/hu/llms.txt - hy: https://animalears.app/hy/llms.txt - id: https://animalears.app/id/llms.txt - is: https://animalears.app/is/llms.txt - it: https://animalears.app/it/llms.txt - ja: https://animalears.app/ja/llms.txt - ka: https://animalears.app/ka/llms.txt - kk: https://animalears.app/kk/llms.txt - km: https://animalears.app/km/llms.txt - kn: https://animalears.app/kn/llms.txt - ko: https://animalears.app/ko/llms.txt - ky: https://animalears.app/ky/llms.txt - lo: https://animalears.app/lo/llms.txt - lt: https://animalears.app/lt/llms.txt - lv: https://animalears.app/lv/llms.txt - mk: https://animalears.app/mk/llms.txt - ml: https://animalears.app/ml/llms.txt - mn: https://animalears.app/mn/llms.txt - mr: https://animalears.app/mr/llms.txt - ms: https://animalears.app/ms/llms.txt - my: https://animalears.app/my/llms.txt - ne: https://animalears.app/ne/llms.txt - nl: https://animalears.app/nl/llms.txt - no: https://animalears.app/no/llms.txt - pa: https://animalears.app/pa/llms.txt - pl: https://animalears.app/pl/llms.txt - pt: https://animalears.app/pt/llms.txt - ro: https://animalears.app/ro/llms.txt - ru: https://animalears.app/ru/llms.txt - si: https://animalears.app/si/llms.txt - sk: https://animalears.app/sk/llms.txt - sl: https://animalears.app/sl/llms.txt - sr: https://animalears.app/sr/llms.txt - sv: https://animalears.app/sv/llms.txt - sw: https://animalears.app/sw/llms.txt - ta: https://animalears.app/ta/llms.txt - te: https://animalears.app/te/llms.txt - th: https://animalears.app/th/llms.txt - tr: https://animalears.app/tr/llms.txt - uk: https://animalears.app/uk/llms.txt - ur: https://animalears.app/ur/llms.txt - vi: https://animalears.app/vi/llms.txt - zh-Hans: https://animalears.app/zh/llms.txt - zh-Hant: https://animalears.app/zh-Hant/llms.txt - zu: https://animalears.app/zu/llms.txt
